Ngaruawahia Te Awa Bridge – Late 2017

In the Spring of 2017, Resin surfaces laid the graphics on the “Perry Cycle Bridge”, over the Waikato River at Ngaruawahia. The Bridge is part of the Te Awa Cycleway, which in turn is part of the Te Araroa Trail, from North Cape to the Bluff.

The design was in 3 colours, dark green, light green and light blue. Resin Surfaces sourced clear glass aggregate and coloured the glass our-selves. Aliphatic polyurethane resin, coloured to the surfacing colour was used, a more expensive option than commonly used on road work, but has the advantage of not changing colour slightly over time with UV exposure.

The blue glass aggregate coating had a small (though expensive) amount of glow in the dark powder mixed in with it, and some plastic, rice sized chips of glow in the dark material was sprinkled onto the blue patches on the bridge itself.

On a dark night with the lights off there is a dull glow from the blue patches, however normally ambient light, and certainly when the bridge lights are on the glow is not noticeable.

We undertook the work for Emmets Construction, who had the head contract for building the bridge.
